lyrics

IV: The Moon Cannot Dream
On a clear winter’s night I fell asleep and I began to dream.
I dreamt of the moon slowly drifting into view.
The moon was of the temperament you would expect from a celestial body, open to conversation, polite as you would believe, but with little affect and, seemingly, little concern. Lighter than you might expect.

The moon greeted me and asked how I was. Being my usual melancholy self I said: “Everything gets worse and there is no way to make it better. Moon, I wish that I could cease to exist. The burden of being is far too difficult to bear”

This puzzled the moon for they had never thought of their existence, much less ceasing to exist and even less the concept of being -- since after billions of years it seemed irrelevant.
“Well” said the moon, “people have looked towards me in wonder and asked what keeps me in the sky, never realizing it is their earth’s pull that keeps me there. Never thinking about what it means for me to pull upon their oceans, only showing them one face. I’ve never given it much worry because I am, have been, and always will be, the moon. It seems that perhaps you should consider that you are, have been, and always will be, you.”

“But moon…” I said “I’m so tired… this all seems pointless”

The moon said “I’ve never been much for trying... my whole purpose is to exist and constantly fall”

“I know I am nothing,” I replied, “but a speck of dust, inconsequential.”

The moon thought about that and replied “I am but a speck of dust in the universe but I affect billions of people.” The moon continued, “Each person has roughly 100 billion neurons in their brain... each a part responsible for the whole of the brain’s function, and therefore the body as well. Can we say that one neuron controls the brain? Your existence contributes to the whole of existence, your termination could break the bridge to something profound, or fail to be the exact tipping point to a moment you have yet to experience. There is enough awful in your world there is no need to hurry that along by your absence. It does not seem right to determine the full extent of our existence. Maybe it is fair to search for it,” said the Moon, “but certainly you realize this is an incalculable feat.”.

“For the moon you seem to know an awful lot. Where do you come by such knowledge?“

“This is your dream,” the moon replied. “I am the moon and I cannot dream. I envy you.”
